Organic Energy

Welsh Water Organic Energy is a company within the Glas Group dedicated to providing value from organic waste within Wales.

It has partnered with Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan Councils and since January 2018 has operated two sites in Cardiff, taking organic waste from both councils.

The first of these sites is the food waste site next to Welsh Water’s Cardiff East Waste Water Treatment Works on Rover Way in Tremorfa. The food waste is processed through anaerobic digestion. This process produces electricity which helps power the neighbouring treatment works, the equivalent electricity of powering 2,000 homes, and quality grade fertiliser.

The other site is the garden waste site on Lamby Way. Here the garden waste is processed through windrow composting which produces compost which can be used for landscaping and building projects or used within the agricultural sector.
